One word: painful.

I recently began what my friends have dubbed a “complete waste of time” after I told them I was going to farm for a Dark Whelpling and not take the “cheap” way out and buy one via the Auction House for 800-1000g. For those who have no clue what I’m talking about, a Dark Whelpling is a rare non-combat pet that has a 1 in 1000 chance of dropping off a Scalding Whelp from the Badlands or a Searing Whelp from Dustwallow Marsh. Craziness, you say? Well, yes, the odds are pitiful, but think of it like winning the lottery. Your chances are infinitesimally small, but if you do manage to hit the big payout, not only will you become one happy person, but you’ll have bragging rights and be filthy rich. Of course a Dark Whelpling is a poor substitute for a winning lottery ticket, but the idea is the same.

As of today I’ve slaughtered around 400 whelplings – averaging about 100 kills per 40 minutes, which isn’t too bad. I’d like to reach at least 1000 before giving up. Fortunately I chose to undertake this endeavor with a high level toon that knows skinning, so at least I’m getting/selling some leather for my time. Should I ever find the elusive DW I’ll post a screenshot.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in trying to farm one yourself, the Badlands is my location of choice. As previously stated, there’s another spot in Dustwallow Marsh, but I haven’t tried it – I’ve had the Badlands to myself so I haven’t seen the need to move.
